Check out what's changing
Brooklyn Connections will improve safety and accessibility along Brooklyn Road, making it easier for people to walk, wheel, bike, catch the bus and travel between Brooklyn and the city. The approved package of changes includes a permanent uphill bike lane on Brooklyn Road, and targeted improvements for pedestrians, drivers and bus users at the bus stops on Brooklyn Road.
Cycling
- The existing protected uphill cycle lane on Brooklyn Road will be made permanent with concrete separators from upper Nairn Street to the corner of Brooklyn Road and Ohiro Road.
- Concrete separators will be installed to separate the cycle lane from traffic.
Bus stops
- Councillors agreed that bus stop 6716 (near Washington Avenue and Brooklyn Road) will remain at its current length and not be reduced from 21 metres to 15 metres as previously proposed.
Walking
- The existing pedestrian refuge crossing on Ohiro Road (outside 143b) will be upgraded to a staggered zebra crossing to move the uphill leg of the crossing away from the Brooklyn/Ohiro Road corner.
Bus stops
- The bus stop outside 159A in Ohiro Road (stop 6718) will stay in its current location
- Bus stop 6719 outside 183 Ohiro Road will be removed
- Bus stops 6716 and 7718 will remain the same length.
Parking
- Up to eight car parks will remain/be reinstated on the east side of Ohiro Road, opposite Tanera Crescent and Cleveland Street. Existing parking outside 169 to 175 Ohiro Road will remain, and up to four parking spaces will be added once the 6719 bus stop is removed outside 181 to 185 Ohiro Road.
- Twenty parking spaces on the west side of Ohiro Road, bewteen Todman Street and Brooklyn Road, will remain.
Considering a clearway and no changes on Helen Street
Councillors also requested further work on extending the existing 30 km/hr speed limit area and a different approach that would introduce a weekday morning clearway (7am-9 am) on the city-bound side of Ohiro Road, rather than a cycleway. Any proposed changes would be subject to public consultation through the traffic resolution process.
The proposed parking changes in Helen Street were not approved to proceed.
Changes by different street users:
Southbound (uphill)
A permanent uphill cycle lane will be installed on Brooklyn Road, from the Nairn Street intersection to 159A Ohiro Road.
The existing pedestrian crossing on Ohiro Road (outside 143b) will be upgraded to a staggered zebra crossing to move the uphill leg of the crossing away from the Brooklyn/Ohiro Road corner.
To improve bus operations and support the new road layout we will be:
- Keeping one bus stop in its current location outside 159A on Ohiro Road (stop 6718)
- Removing existing bus stop 6719 outside 183 Ohiro Road
- Keeping the existing length of bus stops 6716 and 7718.
Parking
- Up to eight car parks will remain/be reinstated on the east side of Ohiro Road (opposite Tanera Crescent and Cleveland Street,) including keeping existing parking spaces outside 169 to 175 Ohiro Road and adding up to four parking spaces at the removed bus stop 6719 outside 181 to 185 Ohiro Road
- Twenty parking spaces on the west side of Ohiro Road, between Todman Street and Brooklyn Road will remain.

Now a decision has been made to go ahead with the Brooklyn Connections project, the plans are being finalised ahead of construction starting in March 2027. We will share the updated plans as soon as they become available.
