Following the original consultation, a decision on 1 bus stop change in Kilbirnie was deferred for further review. The alternative proposal is now open for feedback before a final decision is made. We are asking for your feedback on the proposed changes below. 

Bus stop changes:

  • Rongotai Road (near Ross Street) stop 7027: Bus stop to remain in its current location and be extended to accommodate additional or longer buses. 

Parking changes: 

  • Rongotai Road (near Ross Street) stop 7027: Remove approximately 3 parking spaces. 

This consultation relates to the 11 deferred bus stop proposals only. All other proposed bus stop improvements along the Eastern Bus Corridor were approved by Wellington City Council on 2 September 2026.

Stop 7027 – Rongotai Road at Ross Street 

Original proposal: Remove the stop to improve bus journey efficiency.  

Alternative proposal: Bus stop to be retained and extended to match the new increased bus box and taper standards. 

Explanation for change: Public feedback indicated the current location, and proximity of this stop to the supermarkets in Kilbirnie were critical to residents. 

Feedback received through public consultation highlighted the importance of retaining stop 7027 in its current location due to its proximity to the supermarkets in Kilbirnie, particularly for residents travelling to and from the eastern suburbs. For passengers approaching from the west, the Kilbirnie Bus Hub provides a nearby and well-connected alternative, offering convenient access to the same destinations. 

 

Alternative proposal parking changes 

  • Rongotai Road stop 7027: Remove approximately 2 parking spaces. 

These are the original proposals consulted on in June 2026, including bus stop changes that have now been approved and the original proposals for the 1 Kilbirnie bus stop currently being consulted on.

Bus stops with alternative proposals now under consultation:

Stops 7027 & 6027 - Rongotai Road at Ross Street & near 119

Changes for these stops include: 

  • Removing both stops to improve bus journey efficiency. This results in 2 new unrestricted parking spaces in front of 112/116 Rongotai Road and 2 in front of 119 Rongotai Road. 

Bus stops with changes approved by Councillors:

Stops 7222 & 6222 - Kilbirnie Crescent at WRAC 

Changes for these stops include: 

  • Lengthening both stops and extending bus entry and exit tapers. 

Stop 6222

  • Stop lengthened to 20m

  • 17.6m of ‘no stopping at all times’ marking added to the bus entry taper

  • This results in the removal of four P120 parking spaces (Monday–Sunday, 8.00am–6.00pm) outside WRAC. 

Stop 7222

  • Stop lengthened to 20m

  • 17.9m of ‘no stopping at all times’ marking added to the bus entry taper

  • This results in the removal of 1 unrestricted parking space. 

Stops 7223 & 6223 - Kilbirnie Crescent near Childers Terrace and Kilbirnie Library 

Changes for these stops include: 

  • Removing both stops to improve bus journey efficiency. This results in 2-3 new unrestricted parking spaces in front of 90/92 Kilbirnie Crescent and 3 in front of the WRAC/Kilbirnie Rec Centre carpark.

Stops 7028 & 6028 - Rongotai Road near Te Whiti Street

Changes for these stops include: 

  • Lengthening both stops and extending bus entry and exit tapers, and relocating one shelter. 

Stop 7028

  • Stop lengthened to 20m

  • 19.8m of ‘no stopping at all times’ marking added to the bus entry taper

  • 6.9m of ‘no stopping at all times’ marking added to the bus exit taper

  • Existing bus shelter relocated to new front of stop.

  • RTI sign relocated to the front of the stop 

Stop 6028

  • Stop lengthened to 20m

  • 23.9m of ‘no stopping at all times’ marking added to the bus entry taper

  • 3.3m of ‘no stopping at all times’ marking added to the bus exit taper

  • This results in 3 parking spaces being removed from outside 139 Rongotai Road
